EyeNetra is a technological startup from MIT that specializes in the development of eye care platform that enables on-demand eye testing without the need to visit an optician. Individuals can perform testing in the convenience of their home and people who live in remote locations or in poverty can avoid costly consequences of poor eye care.
Additionally EyeNetra wants to create prescription screens for VR gadgets.
Prescription Virtual Reality Screens[edit]
EyeNetra is planning to create vision corrected screens for virtual reality. The company has been having discussions with several VR companies about the possibility of integrating their technology into VR displays. The custom screens would fit the users' eyeglass prescriptions. This would make for a better experience for people who are wearing glasses and could also prevent some common problems that are associated with virtual reality experiences such as nausea, headaches, and fatigue.
NETRA Autorefractor[edit]
NETRA Autorefractor is an eye measurement and diagnostic tool for eye care professionals and individuals alike. The gadget strongly resembles VR headsets like Oculus Rift or Razer OSVR and is able to measure farsightedness, nearsightedness, misshaped eye, or pupillary distance. The use is quick and simple and the gadget can be operated virtually anywhere from the office to remote rural areas.
NETRA offers the same accuracy as professional autorefractors, which makes it the most affordable refractor that has ever been produced. The whole unit is very portable and can be easily stored in a small backpack or carrying pouch. The gadget is also very user-friendly because there is no need for sophisticated alignment or general preparation.
The first step is to place your smartphone in the front part of the device. Users looking into the gadget will see two shapes: a red and green umbrella. Using the controls on the top of NETRA, users can alight the image and lock it in for testing. After performing a total of 18 of these alignment procedures, the gadget will have enough data to produce accurate results.
NETRA has already served more than 12,000 people in EyeNetra's Nayantara program in India. India has a big shortage of trained eye care professionals and villagers often need to travel a very large distance to receive a diagnosis and get a suitable eye care. The part of the Nayantara program is a training of selected villagers to be able to provide a diagnosis in their communities and recommend further treatment. The similar on-demand testing, called Blink, has also been launched in New York.
