A wafer is a slice of semiconductor or other material that is used in manufacturing microelectronics and/or display gadgets.
For microelectronic machine fabrication, theoretically a wafer could be scribed as the first major processing step. This would enable much physically smaller further processing equipment.
Types[edit]
- Silicon
- Silicon [100]
- Silicon carbide
- Gallium nitride
- Indium phosphide
- Glass
- Sapphire
Composites[edit]
- Indium gallium arsenide epiwafer on indium phosphide
Making[edit]
In making wafers, nearly half of the material is lost when sawing the wafers from the silicon boule.[1]
