An ultimate display is a display that fully satisfies the visual faculty of a human being through the visual external senses. It is the entire field of view, the entire range of brightness, even accounting for medium-term chemical changes in the eye, and it has a full range of focus and retina-level resolution.

For a dynamic display, response time must be fast.

Testing[edit]

A test of an ultimate display is to have an outdoor arrangement with someone looking into a box. The box should have an ultimate display in it, somewhat like a set of binoculars. When the person looks in, he should not be able to tell if he is looking right through the back of the box at the world, or if he is looking at a stored image shown on the display.
