Introduction[edit]
Pico Neo CV, part of the Pico VR, is the new untethered, all-in-one virtual reality headset developed by Pico Technology, which has its base in China and San Francisco Bay. Pico Neo CV was showcased to the world at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 held in Last Vegas. The standalone HMD gadget is set to be rolled out in the United States by the end of this year. At the CES 2017 event, Pico Technology displayed a whole gamut of virtual reality products including Pico Neo DK, Pico Tracking Kit, and the Pico Neo CV HMD headset.
Pico didn’t have to look elsewhere for inspiration. The Pico Neo CV was inspired or derived from Pico’s earlier offering to the tech community – the Pico Neo. Pico Neo is an all-in-one system with a headset, like that of Oculus Rift, and a controller. The headset derives its computing power from the controller.
Hardware[edit]
Pico Neo CV doesn’t come with a three-way head strap. Instead, the headset has a sleek, modern crown design. The front-end of the ring rests on the forehead, while the rear-end sits above the back neck area. Pico Neo CV headset’s design can well be compared to a cap. The crown of the headset sits on the forehead and the peck area is connected to the main device. The crown design reduces pressure and strain on the user’s head and neck.
Features[edit]
Untethered: The Pico Neo CV headset is free from wires. A large majority of the virtual reality headsets currently available in the market requires a Smartphone, console, or a PC to offer the VR experience. Pico Neo CV requires no special hardware. Since no extra hardware is needed to run the new HMD, it’s believed the product would be a lot lesser than other virtual reality headsets.
Sensors: Pico New CV is a lot like HTC Vive; both are stand-alone untethered virtual reality headsets. But, the comparison ends there. In the case of Vive, the wearer’s position and movements are tracked by a pair of base stations. In contrast, the Pico Neo CV comes equipped with fisheye cameras, in the front of the headset, and a bunch of sensors, that tracks the position and the slightest movement of the user.
Six Degree of Freedom: The term 6DoF or Six Degree of Freedom refers to the freedom of movement of an object inside a space. Rather than listing out all six ways in which an object/body can move. For convenience sake, the movement can be categorized as the Rotational Movement and Translational Movement. In Rotation Movement, the object can pitch, yaw, or roll. In the Translation Movement, the object has the freedom to move left/right, up/down, and forward/backward. The Pico Neo CV HMD headset uses the Six Degree of Freedom to give the user the best immersive virtual reality experience.
