A parallax barrier is a gadget placed in front of a display screen, typically in gadgets like 3D displays or autostereoscopic displays (glasses-free 3D displays). Its purpose is to create the illusion of depth by presenting different images to each eye. The barrier consists of a series of precisely spaced opaque or transparent slits or ridges that block or allow light to pass through, depending on the angle of viewing.

By presenting slightly different images to each eye, the parallax barrier enables partial stereoscopic vision, mimicking the natural way humans perceive depth. This technology is commonly used in applications like 3D TVs, handheld gaming devices, and smartphones to create immersive visual experiences without the need for special glasses.
