An operating system is a set of software that is loaded on a system as the system software. When the computer is on, it always runs. The operating system enables a layer of abstraction so programs can run reliably on top of it and make use of its standard features.

UNIX-based operating systems are a type of operating system.

An operating system is typically built for a specific processor architecture.
