Meta was a company that developed and sold augmented reality headsets including the Meta 1 and Meta 2. It also advertised the Meta Pro. Its founder is Steve Mann.[1] Its co-founder and CEO is Meron Gribetz.

Meta is not to be confused with Meta Platforms, AKA facebook, or Meta materials.

Meta's product's original name is "SpaceGlasses".[2] Meta operated the website getameta.com, which redirected to spaceglasses.com.[3] Meta has referred to the human brain as a "natural machine".[4] Meta has also labelled the Meta 2 headsets as "natural machine". It operated the website metavision.com.[5]

Meta became Campfire.[6]

Meta Pro is an advertised optical see-through headset from Meta.[7]

It has about a 40 degree field of view.[7]

It uses display technology from Lumus.[8]


Founding[edit]

Steve Mann created the first Meta augmented reality eyeglasses in Toronto.[1] Afterwards, the company Meta was founded.

The Meta logo, hand-drawn in light, is based on a Mann's design, using abakography.[1]

Meta is a Silicon Valley company known for advertising augmented reality products. The company was founded by Meron Gribetz, who was at the time studying neuroscience and computer science at Columbia University under Steven Feiner.[9]

  • On May 17, 2013, Meta launched a crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign.[10]
  • In the Fall of 2013, Feiner joined as Lead Advisor.[11]
  • In January 2015, Meta announced a $23 million Series A round.[12]
  • On February 17, 2016, Meta unveiled their second-generation product at TED.[13]
  • On June 13, 2016, Meta announced they had raised another $50M in venture funding.[14]
