A HRTF (Head-related transfer function) is a function that can be used for 3D sound. It is useful at short distances away from the head. It characterizes how an ear receives a sound from a point in space.

The size and shape of the listener's head, ears, ear canal, density of the head, size and shape of nasal and oral cavities, boost some frequencies and dampen others, which affects how the sound is perceived.
