Extent is a measure of if something has orientation or not. If something has extent, it has orientation. If something does not have extent, like a point, it does not have orientation.
Extent in three dimensions can be length, width, or height.
The orientation of anything with extent in a three-dimensional space can best be represented by a quaternion.
Examples[edit]
A line segment has extent because it has length. The length between the start and the end. The orientation of the line segment can be represented by a quaternion.
A point does not have extent, because it has no length, width, or height.
