A diffractive optical element is an optical component that can manipulate light by diffraction. DOEs work by exploiting the wave nature of light.

DOEs are usually made of transparent materials such as glass or plastic and are patterned with microscopic structures. These structures cause incoming light to diffract.

An example of one is a diffractive waveguide.
