Diazonaphthoquinone sulfonic acid esters are components of common photoresist materials. Such photoresists are used in the manufacture of semiconductors.

DNQs are typically mixed with Novolac resin, a type of phenolic polymer. The DNQ functions as a dissolution inhibitor.
