A liquid crystal display is a type of flat display. The most useful type of LCD is a color TFT LCD.
LCD is probably not suited to near-eye 3D displays because LCD is typically flat, meaning there is a limited field. This is because of projective geometry.
If a liquid crystal display is damaged by impact, it may leak liquid crystal all over the place.
Orientation layer is another term for an alignment layer in LCDs.[1]
