A pointing device is a computer control peripheral that enables or extends the innate human ability of pointing to an object.

Examples are a computer mouse and a computer trackpad.

LG's webOS TVs use a direct pointing peripheral.

Apple's Magic Mouse operates as a quasi-direct pointing peripheral, mainly due to the high position of the optical sensor on the bottom of the mouse.

The Wii Remote is a quasi-direct pointing peripheral when used with a Wii Sensor Bar.

A 3D pointing peripheral can be built to either point "at" the display, or "through" the display. When pointing through the display, the distance of the pointing peripheral to the screen is used to hold a "tool offset" value in memory or the transform of a virtual representation of the pointing peripheral.

A direct camera-based pointing peripheral for flat panel display based computer systems can be implemented using a camera sensor on the peripheral and a transparent infrared LCD layer showing a registration pattern over the computer screen.
