IMU stands for inertial measurement unit. It is an electronic gizmo that can sense movement in three-dimensional space. IMUs useful for 3D computer technology are MEMS IMUs.

An IMU is most useful if it is an accelerometer and gyroscope combination device.

IMUs are typically used in VR headsets and smartphones, and also in some game controllers like the wiimote.

IMUs generally operate differently on earth and in space due to gravity.

The MPU-6050 has been a popular IMU, but newer chips are available that have better specifications.

IMUs can be used for short term position tracking using dead reckoning.
