A Vision processing unit or VPU is a processing unit that is responsible for image recognition.
The architecture of a VPU is different from a traditional CPU. A VPU's power consumption when recognizing images and faces is far lower than that of regular CPUs. VPUs are designed specifically to handle numerous simultaneous processes involved in neural networks.
The Myriad 2 MA2450 is a VPU by Movidius. Google announced that they signed a deal with Movidius to put the Myriad 2 in future Google gadgets. Google has previously used the processors in Project Tango gadgets.
