3DOF stands for three degrees of freedom. It refers to tracking rotation in three axises.

The original Oculus Rift was 3DOF. The google cardboard is 3DOF. 3DOF can be implemented with an IMU, but IMUs are drifty and cause nausea due to the drift due to vestibular mismatch.

A more complete form of tracking is 6DOF.
